Boost Vocabulary Skills Through Word Buffet

Word Buffet

Vocabulary Actitivities

Word Buffet is a critical thinking word game that can be done solo, in pairs, or my favourite: in randomized groups of three working at NPVS (while applying other Building Thinking Classroom practices). Students will need to think/find words that match the constraints given, trying to create the smallest collection of words possible (eg. maybe finding one word that fits for all 6 constraints).
I have loved using Nat Banting’s Menu Math activities in a BTC style, where groups collaborate on the problems at whiteboards. Word Buffet is built off of the menu math concept, getting students to apply their skills to vocabulary.
If it is your first time using Word Buffet with your class, I recommend using Early Readers first, to help the class learn the routine, then doing From your Text (giving groups a text with bolded vocabulary words to select from), and then going free range!
